Bruce MacNaughton - Vice-Chairman
The owner of the PEI Preserve Company, Bruce MacNaughton trained as a chef at Toronto's George Brown College. After completing his training, MacNaughton returned to the island and open a restaurant that floundered but left him with 200 pounds of frozen strawberries. He ended up adding Grand Marnier to the berries, inadvertently creating the PEI Preserve Company's first flavour. He sold 450 jars the first year; now the company produces 100,000 jars annually.
Initially, the preserves sold wholesale, but MacNaughton secured the old butter factory in New Glasgow, adding a production kitchen so visitors could see the preserves being made, as well as a cafe and an amphitheatre. His first year in New Glasgow, MacNaughton donned a kilt and stood on the corner, waving at every bus and car to attract attention. He also went to the Charlottetown Hotels and pressed his preserves into the hands of the motorcoach tour drivers, along with his pitch. Today, some 700 coaches a year, the majority of those visiting the island, include the PEI Preserve Company on their route.
